Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - "Trout Mask Replica"
How does one begin to describe this masterpiece? This record has fucked so many minds on so many different levels, in such a beautiful way. It's a perfect marriage of free jazz and experimental rock music. Produced by Frank Zappa in 1969, it has influenced many a musician and become a bench mark for all artists serious about creating something truly new and original. It's not the most accessable record to be sure. Not at first anyway. But if you've got the patience, the pay-off is handsome, trust me. I have to admit, the first time I heard this record I was about 15 or so and I said, "What the fuck is this mess?" I was all about Black Flag and Minor Threat and all that hardcore shit, so this Captain Beefheart baloney did not register at all within the confines of my tiny mohawked head. But, like anything with any sort of longevity, anything worth enjoying, it grows on you, like fins.

Good comments on Trout Mask Replica! I was fortunate to see Beefy do a number of shows with various Magic Bands. To see them performing the songs live made the music easier to understand. Here are my photos:
