The chaos of the internet has created some great things... pushing the limits of intellectual property and creating an amazing culture of large scale collobarations that can be heard by a myriad of peoples. Phenomena such as the "mash up", in particular, the Grey Album that Dangermouse created with the use of Beatles and Jay-Z tracks exemplify this. Anyhow - this phenomenon continues and it is beautiful to see that the lines of the sacred can be moved and adjusted much like the artist Banksy putting up his own subversive works in the Tate gallery. This lass that sang with The 'Stones has also done other collaborations as well. I think I may have to play slide guitar on this 'stones track later. Hmmm, anyhow, without further ado... listen up.

I'm not into this. I think the song has one of Jagger's best vocal performances and I just want the non-descript girl's voice to stop so I can listen to it. Not really a fan of the "mash-up" phenomenon either. Most of it is lazy, boring and pointless...like this.

ah fuck it. its good shit. 'Downtown Train' sounds a lil forced but i really like the idea behind the whole project.

I like the concept. But the performance, I dunno... just finished listening to 'Angie' & it's pretty understated. you could easily forget she's there, unless you are actively paying attention.
But hey maybe that's the point.
Now if I was singing overtop, let me tell you, you'd notice. As in, "that guy really ought to keep his day job" ;+)

"you could easily forget she's there, unless you are actively paying attention."
That is the point. This project isn’t about the song or vocal performance so much as it is the concept. I started off my artist statement with a quote from a Simon and Garfunkle song that contains the lines "People talking without speaking/People hearing without listening." I am interested in the way that many people could listen to the songs after I have altered them and not even notice my presence. I am thinking about the culture industry as something that provokes passivity, the consumption of cultural information and products as events that occur without much attention or thought.
I didn’t expect this song to be posted on a website that would have an explanation of the project, or allow for discussion…although it is rad that it is. The mp3s are kept with the same title as the original files so that people can download them from P2P networks thinking they are getting the “real” version of the song. These people then listen to them and either not notice me or think “I didn’t realize they had a girl singing back ups” and keep the mp3s in their music library for other people to download, listen to, and be passively entertained. Some people will definitely notice my presence, and for them I put a link to my website in the song tags with hopes that they contact me and let me know what they think.
p.s. Downtown Train was the first song I did and it probably sounds forced because I had to take constant laugh breaks and was on the verge of busting throughout the whole recording process.

I'm so jealous of the concept of subversive addition to pop songs I cannot stand it. Such a fucking rad idea. If you add slide to "Angie" you should really post it. Excuse me though, I'm going to go beatbox over The 'Mats' "Androgynous".

Hey Shelby!!! i remeber the Frodus years - good times. N.E.way, i dig the Stones (Rolling that is..), not too sure about this collaboration though...not bad, but i still prefer the original (sans gal).

I don't think I care for this, really. It's a song not meant for a duet, no offense. But I'm waiting for the slide guitar, folks.

This is why I don't hang with artists.

Yeah seriously, Christina, I see no point in this, other than for snobby musical elitist reasons ("Har har, I tricked the lesser music fans into believing 'Angie' was a duet"). I bet you're one of those "artists" that people just don't "understand". Go continue your booger collection and keep trying to pass it off as art, ain't fooling me.

Dude, I just found out the Stones have a new album out in Sept. "A Bigger Bang" is what it's called I think. It's probably gonna be pretty boss compared to what's out there now, like all the poser, shitty bands, but not as boss as previous stones albums. Does that make sense?

Man, nobody has posted a comment on this blog in like 3 days. I feel like I need to do something. So, how come the mercedes? Was like someone you know trying to get rid of it or you just liked it or what?

This song is shite. Thats my high paid review done. Instead of wasting time writing 100 words on why it doesnt work I just bee lined to the obvious.
Also, Its jagger singing to a chick. So why is a chick joining in? Its like Henry Rollins singing this stylee mash up thing to "its raining men."
