Forget about "Kick Out the Jams" or "Frampton Comes Alive" or whatever else you've decided on as "best live rock album ever". In just 6 songs on the compilation "Live From The Masque - Year One", The Weirdos lay down the heaviest, most intense live punk rock set ever documented. No shit. Out of tune guitars are pounded on. Vocals cut in and out while microphones are thrown all over the place. This is possibly the best punk rock record you will ever hear. And it doesn't even matter that there are 3 other bands on the cd... The Weirdos blow everybody else away, and make it clear just how irrelevant the Germs really were (who are one of the other bands on the cd that have their asses handed to them by The Weirdos). If they had done nothing else but played this one show, The Weirdos still would have to be remembered as the most important LA punk band of their time... fuck it... in the world. Sure, X, Black Flag and others would kick some serious ass as well, but not until a bit after The Weirdos had already done it way before the 70's were close to being over. As with many other bands of their era, a lot of the studio recordings of these same songs lack the pertinence of the live experience. Ignorance at the time of a proper recording approach for a band with this power has robbed The Weirdos of the full blown legacy they deserve. And on top of that, this compilation isn’t even in print anymore. Bummer. Seeing as how this baby is no longer available, we’re gonna do you all a favor and fork over some of the tracks for free. Don’t let that stop you from hunting this gem down for the other essential tracks "Destroy All Music", and “Hitman”.

The Weirdos were hands-down the best thing that ever came out of the LA punk scene. I saw them play several times, and they were usually a lot tighter than what you hear on this comp. I think these tracks sound so crappy partly because this was recorded at the Masque which had terrible acoustics.

this shit slays. everyone who is even remotely interested in punk should hunt it down. it's not terribly hard to find or terribly expensive. it's one of those life changing records, well atleast it was for me.
