Los Angeles guitar band the Dream Syndicate's 1982 record "The Days Of Wine And Roses" on Slash Records is what I imagine LA's version of The Wipers might sound like. These guys were so into The Velvet Underground (White Light/White Heat-period) that the singer does Lou Reed better than Lou Reed did back in 1982. In fact the name of the band comes from the avant-garde outfit that John Cale played in before he was in The Velvet Underground. But these guys had their own thing going cuz they were also into The Bryds, Neil Young, The Cramps, X, The Gun Club and the Doors. From what I've been told this record inspired the Reid brothers to start a band called The Jesus And Mary Chain. If you get it on cd it comes with a ton of bonus tracks including the "Down There" EP, which sounds awesome. I like the EP version of "When You Smile" better than the album version cuz the guitars sound "crazier". "That's What You Always Say" is a a hit and so is "Then She Remembers". Either way, dig on these tracks... and also listen to the Redd Kross Podcasts by clicking here. Start with episode 1.. although the new one with "Ted" is pretty damn funny too.

I love this album; it was my favorite in high school when it came out! I think Steve's songwriting just got better later on, though. "The Complete Live at Raji's" from the end of the band, with Paul Cutler on guitar, is a completely different experience, even with the same songs, too.

Listen to "Tell Me When It's Over" from this album, and then listen to "Summer Babe" by Pavement. Hmmm... I think Malkmus was listening to this album too.

You don't hear it? Then you weren't listening correctly. Do it again! This is no small matter of opinion.

Jonhope,
Please stop listening to my music. Spread the word to your dorky college-music loving friends, too. My PR guy said it would be a good idea to distance myself from the whole indie-nerd scene...so, yeah...stop it. Watch more adult swim or whatever it is you kids do, but just make sure you realize that my music is not for you.
Thanks!

hmm..dude..i listened to both, they may have the same chord progression, but i sincerely doubt that malkmus was sitting around one day and decided to "rip" off the guitar from this song. go listen to killing joke and then some nirvana, thats true ripoffery.

>the name "days of wine and roses" doesnt come from some >john cale band its an old jazz song
It's originally from a poem by Ernest Dowson called "Vitae Summa Brevis":
They are not long, the days of wine and roses:/
Out of a misty dream/
Our path emerges for a while, then closes,/
Within a dream.
The Dream Syndicate, as the post gets right, were a pre-VU band w/Lou Reed, etc. Forgotten how great *this* band was - thanks for posting these tracks.
